Banda Aceh - The Cool Breeze

3 months into volunteering in Banda Aceh
i found a love with the children of the orphanages i was working at
the children loved teaching me how to speak acehnese
and they just wanted to learn kung fu from me
even the girls wanted to learn to fight

for my birthday i decided to run to the ocean
one boy, Mahlel who was 14 wanted to run with me
it was a grueling run which i almost passed out
sweating and exhausted but Mahlel kept me going
a brave boy who hadn’t seen the ocean
since the tsunami
as we were hundred metres
he was ready to pass out
so throwing him onto my shoulders we made the adventure together

our feet hit the water
and Mahlel was crying in happiness
he forgotten how much he loved the ocean
how much it made him happy
and it made me happy to see him happy

the follow months we had a runnning day to the beach
and more boys would come for the run
and playing on the beach
it was an achievement in my life
seeing over 30 boys following me to Lhongka beach

my journeys also took me to Lamboro Neujid
a town which no cars or trucks could get to
my scooter made the dangerous trek
to this little heaven
there i found a village rebuilding their lives
this is where i stopped
i stopped and helped rebuild
i bought materials for building houses
and helped pull the oxcart for the paddy fields
but my love was catching prawns
standing in the river throwing the net
the cool breeze hitting my face
i closed my eyes
and took it all in
all things in life stop
everything is amazing
and you know nothing matters in this world except living
and being alive

the women of the village cooked the prawns
and the whole village eats together
laughing, singing and dancing
and the things good in life
never putting tragedy in their minds

i think about these moments alot
i think about finding this moment
