Artist's Description

The Council Tower from Sibiu is a tower located in Sibiu, Transylvania, Romania, beneath which is a passage between the Market Square and the Small Square. It was built in the thirteenth century, being originally used as a gateway to the second ring of fortifications of the city. In time, has undergone several renovations that have altered the original shape.

The second ring of fortifications of Sibiu medieval city fortifications assembly, was erected between 1224-1241 (to prevent the Mongols invasion, as main reason).
The upper floors of the tower collapsed on February 17, 1585 and buried under the walls the painter Johann David whom was working on painting the vault. As a result, during 1586-1588 have conducted a series of extensive reconstruction works.
