Artist's Description

A Chinook Salmon (Spring Salmon) makes its way up the Cowichan River to its spawning grounds.

Between July and Nov, Chinook salmon migrate up river as far as 965 -1900 plus kms( 600-1200 miles). The female digs a hollow by lying on her side and thrashing her tail up and down forming a small hole where she lays her 4,242-13, 619 eggs. After laying her eggs, she dies within a few days to 2 weeks. This species utilizes about 260 streams in British Columbia, which is fewer than do other species.

Taken at 1/800, f/5, +2/3 EV, 220 mm, man col bal, iso 500.
Slight histogram adjustment in Lightroom 2.5, slight adjustment in shadow/highlight and lab sharpening via later lightness channel and unsharpmask ( amount 30 Radius 2, Threshold 2). No cropping.
