Artist's Description

This monument commemorates the death in 1881 of Queen Sunanda,a favourite wife of King Rama V who drowned in the river when her boat capsized. This is a sad story because although she could have been rescued the boatmen were powerless to help as a Palace Law prohibited them from touching royalty, if they had attempted to take hold of the Queen, they would have faced execution!
