Artist's Description

This image was taken in Downtown Brantford. Brantford is a small town just outside of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. This lovely lady greeted customers of the Trusts and Guarantee Company from 1914 until that company became Central Trust in 1980. By the 1990’s the bank was gone.

Like most urban centres downtown Brantford has lost most of it’s banks. Ironically the building is now occupied by a Money Mart. A poor man’s cheque cashing and loans alternative to the big banks.

Details like these are reminders that there was once a time that art was considered an essential part of buildings and your building was expected to say something unique about your company. I wonder just what this bust said about this company in 1914 in an area not known for naked women in architecture.

Taken with a Canon EOS Rebel T1i.
