Artist's Description

This is a common garden plant that has escaped into the wild in some places, particularly on the beach at Port St Mary. Native to South America, this plant was first introduced to Britain around 1597.

Nasturtiums are edible and were a popular salad plant when they were first introduced. They have also been used in herbal medicine, notably being used to create a herbal antibiotic in Germany.

The Manx name for this plant is “storshin”.
