Artist's Description

While uncommon on the island, this plant is found in several of the island’s towns, including Port Erin, Ramsey, Peel and Kirk Michael. It is also known as “false barley” and has several subspecies.

A relative of cultivated barley species, its seeds can be ground into flour and used in the same way as cultivated barley.

The Manx name for this plant is “Oarn voalley”.
