Artist's Description

This is one of many plants that resemble dandelions, and it can be very difficult to identify the specific species. The bright red stripes on the back of its petals tend to distinguish Mouse-ear Hawkweed. Similar plants such as Cat’s Ear (Hypochaeris radicata) can have similar stripes, but they tend to be darker in colour.

Mouse-ear Hawkweed is common across the island and can form large patches.

The Manx name for this flower is “Stroin-vuc”, which means “pig nose”.
