Artist's Description

Also known as Sloe, Blackthorn plants can vary from low-growing thickets to trees up to 5 metres tall.

Blackthorn flowers are very easily confused with those of the Cherry Plum (Prunus cerasifera).

The berries of this plant (Sloe Berries) are edible but very sour. Their most famous use may be in making Sloe Gin.

The Manx name for this plant is “Drine arn”, which means “Sloe thorn”.
