Artist's Description

This tiny fern is easily missed among the grass and you’re unlikely to spot one unless you’re specifically searching for them. This one was shown to me on an orchid walk organized by the Manx Wildlife Trust.

Moonworts spend most of their lives completely underground, only emerging occasionally to produce spores. It’s possible for a Moonwort to remain entirely underground for up to 10 years, as it is able to feed on underground fungi.

The Manx name for this flower is “Lus luna”.
