My Mask (Who's Named Fred)

I’ll make and mask and I’ll call a friend
And then we’ll trade places! But where does it end?
‘Cause then when I’m Fred I’ll just call myself Joe
I’ll say I’m a farmer who works with a hoe
But then I’ll say, no, I’m the seeds in his ground!
And soon I’ll be flowers that spin all around
And when I grow tall then I’ll reach for the moon
But then when I reach it I’ll be a balloon
I’ll float through blackness containing my air
And think that I wish that my string were not there
So what will that make me? A big string-less ball?
I suppose that’s okay, though, ‘cause then I’ll just fall
But then I’ll get thirsty and wish for a cup
Oh, what a story my mind can think up
A story that spins but it never does end
Why must my mind find such stories to bend?
Tell it, be calm! Make it sit in a chair
But then it would tell you, Oh no, I’m not here
I’m there out the window, a bird in a tree
A bird who’s a squirrel who in his mind’s a bee
