Artist's Description

Born in Compton Place, Eastbourne, Lord Frederick Charles Cavendish (30 November 1836 – 6 May 1882) was the second son of the 7th Duke of Devonshire (the family own the Bolton Abbey Estate), becoming an English Liberal politician and protégé of the Prime Minister, William Ewart Gladstone. He was appointed Chief Secretary for Ireland in May 1882 but was murdered within hours of his arrival in Dublin by the Irish National Invincibles. He was buried near Chatsworth.
