Artist's Description

A walk from Bolton Abbey up to Simon’s Seat through the Valley of Desolation revealed a gem in the shape of the Posforth Gill Force which, even on the hottest day of the year thus far, was in sufficient spate to be a lovely sight. The drawbacks were the hoards of biting midges, excessive heat and oppressive humidity – experienced huge impulse to enter the inviting waters!
Sony SLT A77V – in an attempt to achieve the current vogue for foaming milky waters in such photographs and in the absence of ND filter I had to go for the longest possible exposure despite the quite intense light at the time – also blended multiple bracketed exposures separated by -3 to +3 EV. So chose slowest ‘film’ speed – ISO 50 and a tiny aperture of f22 – the latter helping with DOF – gave me a shutter speed of 1/10th S for ‘correct’ 0EV exposure. Focal length of 28mm on Sony 16-50 SSM lens – all mounted on Vanguard Alta 225 CP tripod.
