Jonah 4:10-11

But the LORD said, “You have been concerned about this vine, though you did not tend it or make it grow. It sprang up overnight and died overnight. But Nineveh has more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left, and many cattle as well. Should I not be concerned about that great city?”

While we may know Jonah as a prophet, he also provides an ultimate model of how to procrastinate, hesitate and hold grudges. Jonah maintains a “line of obedience” that he refuses to cross. When God asks the prophet to cross that line and proceed to the Assyrian capital of Nineveh, Jonah sets out in the opposite direction. Jonah doesn’t want to preach judgment on Nineveh because he fears that the people might listen and repent. And he knows God will withhold destruction if they do. Jonah wants Nineveh wiped out, and God’s compassion makes him angry. As you read Jonah, you’ll find personal truth in the prophet’s experience. Think about how much we resemble Jonah. Consider the lengths to which we will go to avoid doing what God wants us to do; how slow we are to admit our ulterior motives; how readily we take God’s mercy toward us for granted and begrudge his grace toward others; how we assume his love for us while questioning his love for others. Most of all, note that when we reject God’s forgiveness of others we devalue his forgiveness for us.
