Like Leaves

I’ve had time to think about us,
to muse over memories,
to linger over words,
to ponder what we could have been.

We were like clouds
written upon heaven’s blue smile,
like the long moonlit dreams
of summer’s radiant flowers,
like leaves entwined on fragrant limbs
that caught golden sunlight
in their tiny green palms.

Like a fallen feather lifted by the wind
we felt so alive
but we loved long enough to know
that seasons change
and they can be unkind.

Just as the rain turns to ice
our words turned to knives
and the wind that once lifted us
tore violently at the trees,
dooming us to drift away
from each other
like leaves.
