Artist's Description

Frank Kafka was a Czech Jew with a deeply tommented soul but whose written words, written in an allegorical style, struck deep into the psyche of 20th Century man. He focused on the way man is essentially ‘pushed around’ by seemingly arbitrary and impersonal forces. It would be nice if we could say that his writtings only reflected certain events that occurred in the 20th century but unfortunately the same forces he beguiled in his work are opperative in relation to the 21st century man as well. As his work ‘The Trial’ portrays, he anticipates the way in which current society, as in the 30s, subjugates individual consciousness and will. The term ‘Kafkaesque’ has come to describe how totalitarian bureaucracy can become artitrary, inhuman, and ultimately humiliating to all those in society. The original image was taken from a 1069 magazine called ‘History of the 20th Century’ which included 96 weekely parts delivered every thursday and costing 75 cents Canadian. The specific section was titled: Literature: Commitment and Disillusion. Author unknown. Photographer not named.
