Artist's Description

I have a love-hate relationship with this picture. This was taken on my first day on Iceland last April. Me and my mum did the golden circle which is the standard tourist route with the beautiful waterfall Gullfoss, the Geysir after which all other geysirs are named, Thingvellir where we walked in between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, and this stunning volcanic crater lake called Kerid.
I was fast asleep when mum woke me up and said that we should have a look at this volcanic crater lake which I wasn’t too fussed about because you couldn’t really see anything from the parking lot. Half asleep I grabbed my camera and followed my mum. Once we got over the hill we saw this beautiful, extremely clear crater lake. There was a bench in the water because the water level goes up and down as it is connected to the overall water system on Iceland.
We walked to the lake and I decided to take a more difficult route back up to see if I could find anything interesting and so I did. There was a tiny cave with a few icicles in them which I didn’t expect as I thought it was too warm for icicles to form. Regretting that I didn’t grab my GoPro when I left the car I tried to squeeze myself into the cave to get this shot (behind the scenes picture in comments). It took me quite a while to finally get a nice water drop coming off the Icicle.
What I didn’t notice is that it took me such a long time that my mum started worrying where I was as I was well hidden inside the cave. Apparently she shouted my name a few times which I didn’t hear. Afterwards she told me that she thought I’d fallen into the lake. Eventually she did find me and understood why I needed to get this shot.

Why the love-hate relationship? It would be a much nicer picture if the lake was in focus as well which I didn’t think of whilst uncomfortably sitting in the cave. That’s the thing about these kind of pictures: You get one chance to do it right and you should think thoroughly about what you want. I’ve learned from my mistake.
