Artist's Description

The dark side of the moon … is just called that because it is not visible from Earth. The Moon rotates around its axis in about the same time it takes to orbit Earth (= synchronous rotation). That’s why we always see the same side. The Moon used to rotate at a faster rate, but its rotation slowed and became tidally locked in this orientation. It was only 1959 when a Russian probe called Lunik 3 was able to photograph the far side of the Moon – discovering it’s actually lighter than the near side, because it lacks the dark plains we’ve grown accustomed to see.
