Artist's Description

While surrounded by the beauty of nature at Proxy Falls, OR, this piece of darkened lumber caught my attention. First, I thought how lovely it was, then I questioned what had made it so dark. Was it simply wet, a different kind of tree, or had it been burned in a recent forest fire. I shuddered at the thought, knowing that forest fires are very common in the pacific northwest, especially in late summer before the rains come again. I settled on the idea that this was a piece of burned tree, happy to be in the cool waters again. What a reality check for all of us – please, be careful with your campfires, controlled field burnings, cigarettes and shotguns. We are all affected by forest fires, and it is one thing in this life we CAN control.
