VH-XVI is one of two Spitfires preserved still in airworthy condition – owned by the Temora Aviation Museum in Temora, NSW, Australia!
The other, a Spitfire Mk VIII, VH-HET, was in the engineering hangar undergoing it’s annual inspection and an engine change.
1053 Mk XVI’s were built as a low-level interceptor version of the Mk IX fitted with a Packard Merlin 266 V12 engine rated at 1580hp. Some Mk XVI’s had clipped wings and many had teardrop canopies.
