Relating to the Development Plans at 238 Paterson Road, Newport (PA0526971)

Dear Council Planners,

I seem to be having one of those Thursdays where I’ve only just found out that the plans to demolish my house to make way for a bypass have been available down at the local council planning office for months now but instead of my house it’s our bathroom and instead of a bypass its an office block and its not actually Thursday but Wednesday.

In any case, I’ve reviewed the plans for the development of three offices at 238 Paterson Road, Newport (PA0526971). We live in the flat above the shop space at 238a under a twelve month lease signed in early July 2008. The current plans illustrate the demolition of the old flats at 238, which is unfortunate for us because our bathroom happens to be built into the back most portion of the second level, see fig 2, its spot on, whoever drew it captured the underlying essence quite well. If the proposed development is to occur, where do you suggest we go to the toilet? Through our newly acquired gaping big hole in the wall?

Though the submission makes no indication of plans to build a new bathroom before or during construction if any do exist we don’t know what they are. There isn’t exactly any free space for a new bathroom at the moment as its currently all tied up being our bedrooms, kitchen and lounge room. I’d hazard a guess that this is why the current bathroom isn’t located in any of these areas.

A new bathroom would require a major restructuring of the flat’s interior and cannot happen while we are living here as we don’t want to share with a construction team even if they are great guys who wipe their boots at the door and know how to cook a mean chicken masala.

Additionally, the entrance to our dwelling is located at the ground flood of 330a, which backs straight onto the proposed building site itself. This could be a problem as we enter and leave the premises as none of us have successfully completed the builder’s safety course required by law to be present on a construction site. Not to mention that the site would also require the destruction of our hot water system, letter box, car park and spot to put the wheelie bins.

We’re of the opinion that these plans haven’t been thought through terribly well and can’t legally happen until our lease expires. We’ve checked, there’s no clause relating to the demolition of the bathroom.
