A Bryce only creation and render . . .
This creation had been rendering for about 5 days. I did interrupt the render twice to do some quick construction work in Bryce but that would only account for a couple of hours out of those 5 days . . .
. . .
A Closer Look . . .

. . .
So, How did I make this . . .
. . .
The Regal Torus
I play with Bryce . . .
I really haven’t spent much time with tutorials, so chances are what I do is either wrong or doing it the hard way . . .
So, any Bryce experts reading this, please correct me where I am wrong, or the explain the better way to do it.
This is basically the process I undertook to create this piece.
I work a lot in ‘plan view’ (looking down on my stage). So one of the 1st things I do is either remove the pre-existing ground plane altogether or move it to behind the camera position. This way I don’t need to worry about picking up the ground plane mesh all the time. If removed you can always bring it in later.
. . .
The Making of the Regal Torus
Create a torus, duplicate it and reduce the duplicate slightly in size.
Make the new torus a negative and the original a positive. Group and convert to boolean.
Take a cylinder make it half as wide as the torus and centre it across the width. Extend it in all other directions until it is slightly bigger than the torus. Make the cylinder negative and the torus positive. Group and convert to boolean.
Rotate final boolean 90 deg on ‘x’ axis to lay it perpendicular to the ground plane.
Set material to perfect mirror.
Making 8 point star shaped holes . . .
Create a cube. Duplicate it and rotate on ‘y’ axis 45 deg. Make both objects positive. Group and convert to boolean.
Adjust size of this star shaped boolean and position it on the surface of your shell torus. Extend it’s length so that it is slightly wider than the 2 shells.
Make it a negative.
Duplicate it and move the copy to the exact opposite of the torus. Group it with the 1st star shaped boolean.
Duplicate. Rotate duplicate 22.5 degrees.
Repeat process until you have completed the circle with one of the shapes every 22.5 deg.
Select them all and ungroup them. Make sue that they are all negatives. Make the empty torus positive. Group and convert to boolean.
Now we have two torus shells in mirror finish with 16 star shaped holes in each shell.
Create a cube extend it’s height x 2 (y axis scale) and top and bottom it with a pyramids. Make all three positive, group and convert to boolean. Duplicate and rotate 45 deg on ‘y’ axis. Make both positive, group and convert to boolean.
Adjust size until it is exactly the same size as the star holes made previously.
Line up with one of those holes and extend the length until the point shows through each side of the mirrored torus shell.
Duplicate and place the duplicate in the opposite hole.
Set material to ruby.
Group both and duplicate and rotate 22.5 deg.
Set material of this group to sapphire.
Group with previous group.
Duplicate and rotate 45 deg and repeat until all the holes are filled with alternate ruby and sapphire star shapes.
Group everything.
Create a new torus.
Rotate 90 on ‘x’ axis and position on the ‘y’ axis at the centre of the mirrorshell torus.
Extend its size until it is just slightly smaller than the torus shells.
Set material to diamond.
Create more tori and set to polished gold and position at the edges of both mirror shells . . .
The inner tori were set at 50 and the outer edge ones set at 20
Group all and save.
Now you have a Regal Torus . . .
Inside the Regal Torus I have placed a custom made Light Capsule which I will tell you about some other time . . .
