Get In Behind

The persistence of memory has left me spellbound
From the foothills of heaven to right here in grey town

The word of God is in the can
Revenge picked fresh
The prestige has disappeared
Methuselah’s door is shut
The lilacs are in bloom
There are no children here

Unmoved by what the preacher and his drove have to say
In the workingman’s cafe I hear silence have it’s way
Persauding farmers and the businessmen to measure what they weigh
As undercover cops freeze set upon by the overgrown clay

The apparition of the wind changes suddenly the direction
Of every change through which I’ve been
All my buttons missing now, the holes in my socks left unseen
As I see you wash your clothes instead of having them dry cleaned
Isn’t it a pity I have to re-exhibit everything I’ve seen
Just so you believe I’m not living in a dream?

I’ve seen the light but it was not the light of day
I’ve tried my best to leave you but I cannot find the door
Was democracy just a moment when the heavens were aligned?
The dangers of peace are that there is a time for war
Everything is broken here I see but nothing else is wrong
Oh mercy, there will be blood, get in behind!
