No Way To Tell

I’d be grateful if you write to me
Delerious if its out in full
There was no way to tell
Which one of your clothes
Was made to get ripped.

The seagulls hover
The costumes fade
The system crashed
But the waves of little cars
Keep rolling in.

I pushed the envelope underneath your door
But the phantom of the soap opera
Is unavailable for comment
While the passionate pilgrim researches 1984.

Leaving you, I wandered lonely as a cloud
Amongst the ruins of the afternoon
The one eyed suit slipped by silently
Shop displays and pony tails
I listened to the pavement talkers
Reciting poems about poetry.

Have we lost ourselves somewhere along the way?
The blue mouth of April spills
The Indian blood of folded bills
Into the belly button of time undone
Never sure if to walk or if to run
I crossed the road abit too soon
Tempted by tomorrow
And those patched up, knee high hills
Tell me babe, is our history all in vain?

Oh, the foolish and the brave
Their fine lines of operation hinder me
From creating what I wasn’t meant to see
But doctors, nurses too, fall from grace
Their patience bends to tear the lace
Of wandering curves without
New born mouths to feed.

In Chinatown, sleeping dogs lie in bed awake
Faces don’t seem to fit
The wind sweeps fortune tellers off their feet
The invisible man travels underground
Carrying a broom
But you know I never stay
In one place for too long.

There is still no news from the war
The wise man rides the ferris wheel
The black balloon holds the moon
The rich man is too blind to steal
Funny farmers take their pound
Frequent flyers causing panic
Through the all night, supermarket aisles.

Blank monkeys of bureaucracy
Don’t know my current position
Or visits to the tombs in me.
The specialist appears
Democracy is spolit rotten
Hung out to dry, on the beach
Where desperate lovers rent.

The eleven disciples went to sleep on the mountain
I talked to one of your children or was it you?
There seemed no reason why she might have been sent.
No way to tell what any of it all meant
Her brand new clothes didn’t reveal enough.
