Painted Faces

With faith in faith I follow the human race
Folded clothes hung out to dry, then laid out to waste
Mr Momus Jones lifts the mask from his curious face
While quiet judges secretly begin their unending chase
Fugitive pianists can’t keep the jazz police pace
The singing politican paints his worried face
The lowly organgrinder, he is playing grace
Stacked decks fold, back for a closer taste

But there’s a woman
Who’s always on the telephone
And she holds a handful of aces
But she won’t leave me alone
And she says “who’s gonna take away
All these painted faces?”

Outside the museums, ragmen walk the beat
Sleeping dogs are wide awake to the horseman’s taste
While dead angels float, losing time of day
The phantom of the opera is complete
Fortune tellers ease rainy days into a week
Playin’ chinese whispers with ambassadors discreet
While businessmen drink up then hide amongst the wheat
And disappear into the desert, rescuing the meek

But there’s a woman
Who’s always on the telephone
And she holds a handful of aces
But she won’t leave me alone
And she says “who’s gonna take away
All these painted faces?”

In the garden cafeteria,
Jesus Jones is unavailable
Commissioned clowns must till
Climate change obeyed
But not the will of common sense
ldleness is painful, not completely wasted
Indifference conveyed to avoid coincidence
Waiters stand around, left to foot the bill

But there’s a woman
Who’s always on the telephone
And she holds a handful of aces
But she won’t leave me alone
And she says “who’s gonna take away
All these painted faces?”

Pedestrians crossing, slow the human race
The middleman is leading, he pulls another ace
Mountain climbers glued to Scott’s first base
While the locals wait for me to make a mistake
Ophelia sits like Bhudda at the edge of the lake
As the legs of the ocean return their biggest break
The arms of the poet consume all I’ve made
I might look like Jesus Christ
But I see it just like Jesse James

But there’s a woman
Who’s always on the telephone
And she holds a handful of aces
But she won’t leave me alone
And she says “who’s gonna take away
All these painted faces?”
