Artist's Description

It was actually quite a thrill to be able to see a flock of wild turkeys during mating season. My much-referred to Aunt has been putting out feed for a flock who have made camp on her property and she called me during the very early Spring to let me know they were ‘in season’. It took several visits before I was able to get a few clear photographs (I hate to use the word ‘shots’ even photographically LoL) but the time was absolutely fascinating.

Their behaviour is quite amazing. The gentlemen puff up and their wattles, the odd looking bit under their chins, become very red or blue when they have a particularly urgent goal in mind….the female. From what I understand about the males, the puffing up of the feathers is to attract the females while they quite literally parade about showing themselves off. It reminds me of those stories about the dandies who paraded around Louis XIV’s court but the turkeys just might be wearing more elaborate attire. :-D

The colours of the feathers are emphasized by the light of sunrise.
