Summers Shady Solace

Looking out at the boy running over verdant green gave Keisha a nostalgic release. She recalled the earnest, carefree excitement of youth and wanton joy in running, running, and falling to rise up and run again, delighting in movement safe under patient parental observation. Hurrying, he darted around wispy tussocks to finally drop breathless into humid shade and quiet recovery before being proprietorially gathered up and carried away, energy expended. From inside she noticed a green dragonfly batting rhythmically on the flyscreen, fenced inside. A jewelled sacrifice to summer, lifespan linked with sunshine, and yet, chained in the shade – surely its faceted carapace would fall into the window sash, invisible and spent. Desiring abatement of its anxious motion, Keisha weighed the risks to gather and release the dragonfly into the verdant green, to momentarily cocoon its outstretched jewelled wings, promising return of her shady solace.
