I quoted a little bit of this poem that I learned as a very small child in my writing the other day. I thought you might like all of it.
Abu Ben Adam (may his tribe increase)
Awoke one night from a deep dream of peace
And saw, within the moonlight of his room
Making it rich, like a lily in bloom
An Angel writing in a book of Gold.
Exceeding peace had made Abu Ben Adam bold
and to the presence in his room he said
‘What writest thou?’
The vision raised its head
And with a look of all sweet accord
Answered’: ‘The names of those who love the Lord’
‘And is mine one?’ said Abu
‘Nay not so’ replied the Angel:
Abu spoke more low
But cheerily still and said ‘I pray thee then
Write me as one that loves his fellow men’
The angel wrote and vanished. The next night
It came again with awaking light.
And showed the names of whom love of God had blessed.
And lo!! Ben Adam’s name led all the rest.
Remember in the game of Life
It’s not if you won or lost
but how you played the game.

lovely words in the game called life
Thank You, great…
Yes! I remember having to learn this off by heart at Primary school
Thanks for sharing appreciated
One of the greatest moral lessons taught in a most appealing way, is Abu Ben Adam. The thing that I like best about it is that I’m certain that it is spiritually true, beautiful and just. Abu faught the good fight, kept the true faith, finished the race. A good person pays for armour, but the poseur steals a paper dress. I’ll never tire of this poem. Thank you.
My Grannie use to recite that poem to me as a small boy its good to see it in print thanks
Wonderful Lady H – oh for children to learn lessons like this again!
I think now days our education lacks many good lessons that have been dropped off for being “Old fashioned” or not PC or just viewed as inflicting unwanted ideas onto another!
Man Politics annoys me!
