My Town

As some of you showed interest in my ancient buildings, I thought I would give you a potted version of the town from which the shots came.
In 1020 AD the Bishop’s Palace was established as a hunting lodge for the Prince Bishops of Durham. The Palace is surrounded by 800 acres of Parkland Trees.
Inside the Palace we have 12 of the 13 paintings of Jacob and his 12 sons painted by Franscesco de Zurbaran, and saved by Bishop Trevor in 1756, because he could not find the 13th he commissioned Arthur Pond to paint a copy which hangs alongside the originals.
We are on a Roman road, Dere Street and we have a Roman Fort Vinovia, the military bath house being the best preserved example known.
Our elegant Town Hall is built in the Dutch style (no doubt you will see photos, I just haven’t posted any yet) it houses the library, 2 theatres, and art gallery, tourist information and a cafe. along with a tea dance room used every Tuesday for just that.
The old Railway Viaduct with its eleven Arches is now a motor road and takes the strain from the 14th century Skirlaw Bridge nestled beneath it its massive expanse in the valley below.
A Saxon church is just across the river at Escomb built between 670 and 690 AD much of the stone came from the Roman Fort and has Roman markings on it. It is in absolutely perfect order , tiny but perfect. Sir Anthony Eden former Prime Minister was born here and Stan Laurel lived here as a child and went to the local Grammar school. We are very proud of our heritage. Hope you enjoy the potted version.
