Natural Medicine - made easy Part 13

Let us take a look at Selenium, the most important nutrient to
emerge since Vitamin E. There is growing evidence that Selenium
plays a vital role in the prevention of certain types of cancer and
heart disease.
Selenium, named after the Greek goddess of the Moon ‘Selene’ is a
non-metallic element now recognized as one of the trace minerals
essential to human health.
Selenium helps to detoxify heavy metals, including lead, cadmium
and mercury. These are commonly found in cigarette smoke, smog
and industrial pollution, and of course do not forget some tooth
fillings.
Because Selenium occurs naturally in soil and water, it is absorbed
by plants and animals making it available through food sources.
Some people live in areas rich in Selenium and others live in areas
poor in Selenium. The answer is to take a supplement of Selenium
daily, because the people who live in high Selenium areas suffer
from less cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, arteriosclerotic and
hypertensive diseases.
In a seven year study Dr.Schrauzer found that Selenium is a
definite protector against the development of breast cancer.
Selenium and Vitamin E go hand in hand and are natural partners.
Selenium has a sparing effect on Vitamin E – the body needs less if
Selenium is present.
Selenium is essential for the proper function of all the reproductive
organs. There is evidence that it is nutritionally valuable for hair,
skin, and nails, and also that Selenium can protect against
excessive radiation from radio and T.V.sets,T.V. transmitters,
microwave ovens and medical-rays.and of course Computers.
It also is an anti-ageing agent being an anti-oxidant.

Selenium often comes in a package with Zinc, thus killing two
birds with the one stone, so to speak.
Zinc is essential for maintaining hair, so hair loss – alopecia, poor
growth of eyebrows and eyelashes can benefit greatly from extra
zinc.
Zinc deficiency can manifest itself in a lot of different symptoms.
Lack of appetite, diarrhoea. abdominal pain, dandruff, loss of hair
pigment (colour) pronounced white lines on the fingernails,
immune suppression, allergic hypersensitivity, delayed wound
healing plus many more.
It can cause behavioural disorders such as Anorexia nervosa,
mental depression, sleep disorders, increased sensitivity to stress,
hyperactivity, bulimia nervosa, and some types of schizophrenia,
sub-fertility in males, and possibly females, loss of sexual libido,
to name but a few.(these would not be found in one patient of
course, and must be seen as separate issues)

Some deficiencies could be due to the use of phosphate fertilizers
and certain other modern agricultural practices.
