Natural Medicine - made easy Part 9

White Willow (Salix Alba)

The natural Aspirin, from the bark of the White Willow Tree,
which usually grows in moist places and specially running streams,
can be taken when needed, but if one tablet is taken daily it will
help to alleviate the pain of Arthritis and control migraines.
In ancient times the charcoal from the Willow made the finest
gunpowder, but Willow is better known for the making of cricket
bats. Dioscorides said that when the bark was burnt to ashes and
steeped in vinegar it took away corns and other risings on the feet
and toes., and another ancient herbalist Parkinson said that the bark
of the Willow while in flower was good for redness and dimness of
eyesight, and films that grow over them (one presumes her means
cataracts), and also that the leaves and bark made into a decoction
and put into wine is good for bathing the places pained with gout.
These of course are long forgotten uses for the Willow and it is so
much easier to take in tablet form.
Homeopathic Arnica (used fundamentally) has the same properties
as the Willow, with the advantage of reducing any bruising at the
same time.
With pain, prevention is better than cure, and in the case of
Migraine it would be advisable to try and ascertain what triggers
an attack. Do you drink a lot of Coffee? Do you eat Chocolate? Do
you eat Cheese? Make a list of what you did eat the day
preceding your migraine attack. When next you have one, refer
back to your list, are the same things on it again?
As we have said before, everyone is unique, what will trigger off an attack of
something in one person will not necessarily affect another. Some
ladies suffer migraines just before a period, or in the middle of
their monthly cycle, and some even at the end of the period.
Migraine can be brought on by stress, and also a number of other
things. Try to trace yours to the cause. Then treat the cause,
because the pain is only the effect, not the actual cause., and do not
leave anything out, did you try a new perfume? did you do your
nails?. Sometimes odours can trigger off these. Cosmetic scents
or fumes can enter the body and have a direct effect on the brain.
There is a route from the nasal passages to the nervous system,
(hence inhaled cocaine has an effect on the brain – a bad effect).
These sensitivities are just like food sensitivities, they are truly
individual, and some will have less or no problems with them
If you think you may be affected then top up your vitamin and mineral
levels, and seek out a clinical ecologist. This is a physician who
specializes in environmentally induced ailments. He/She can
determine specific sensitivity through testing and offer specialized
treatments along with avoidance strategies.
If you are interested in learning more you can find practical
instructions for self-testing for sensitiveness in Dr. Mandell’s ‘5day
Allergy relief system’ book.
