Choking stife filled the air catching at the throat, stinging the eyes and smiting the
nose. Dust mites floated in the light shafting through the cloying mist.
Vanessa’s cooking got no better. Richard folded the morning paper he had been
reading whilst waiting for the first sacred meal of the day, the burned offering of
breakfast. Each meal was a sacrificial offering, in fact every meal Vanessa cooked was
a sacrifice of good food.
Richard and Vanessa had been married for ten years, but today Richard decided, he
had had enough, or at least his stomach had had enough. He had to leave. He loved his
wife, but his stomach didn’t, in fact it hated her.
As he made his decision his eye rested on a short column in the folded newspaper. ‘Au
Pair seeks kind English Family. Cooking, cleaning, washing, ironing, children taken
care of’. Contact Brigitta Something or other. Stockholm’. Richard stared in disbelief.
That was it. An answer to his prayers. They could get an au pair, she could cook and
Vanessa could do any of the other things she wanted., she could go back to work if
she cared to., but the au pair would cook.
His spirits rose. This would save his marriage, his home, his sanity and his gastro-
intestinal tract. Perfect.
