Psychic Detective Chapter 17

Jeff duly arrived back with the drinks and almost simultaneously the bell went for the second half and for the returning to seats.
‘Drink up Emilia, sorry about that’ he said
‘It wasn’t your fault Jeff, but I will hurry if you don’t mind. I would hate to miss anything’ I gulped down the sweet martini and gasped as the liquid hit my throat and then my stomach.
’I’ll probably end up drunk as a skunk, drinking it that fast’ I said and laughed.
Jeff had got himself a short of some kind and he tossed that back too.
‘Probably get as drunk as sunks together’ he said joining in my laughter.

We hurried to our seats, just in time. the lights were dimming as we sat down.
The second half of the play was quite thrilling and I lost myself in the drama of it all. All too soon it was over. The players filed onto the stage and bowed and the audience clapped loudly their appreciation. the curtain came down for the last and final time.
It was over for another night.
I felt that let down feeling that often follows something of such enjoyment, but I cheered up when I remembered that we had yet to go backstage and meet the players.
Jeff had arranged everything with the management of the theatre. We were to go backstage and interview the actors separately in their dressingrooms. I could barely hold on to my excitement.

We visited Reggie Barlowe first, he was an elderly man who had been in the theatre most of his adult life. He had snow white hair and played character parts, usually elderly well to do landowner. He told me this as we chatted to him.
Jeff tried to keep the interviews as informal as possible, getting as much information as he could glean from their body language and getting more from what they didn’t say than what they did.
Jeff, (I was careful not to call him that when there were others there) asked Reggie if he recognized the girl in the photograph. He handed the picture to Reggie who looked at it carefully. I noticed his eyes glazed a little as he looked.
‘Yes,’ he said handing the photograph back ’ It’s Margot del Mar, not her real name of course, but the only name I know her by. Nice kid, bit of a tease, but quite sweet in her own way. She was working here until recently, was supposed to take over from
Clarisse for this play on account of Clarisse breaking her leg. We weren’t going to get involved until the play had ended , bad publicity you know, but I cannot see the point now, the girl is dead and nothing is going to bring her back. ’ he finished lamely.
The Inspector’s face was a mask, and I couldn’t even guess what he was thinking. It would appear they could have found out a lot sooner who the girl was if the theatre people had spoken up.He made to say something and then changed his mind.
‘Thank you Mr. Barlowe, that will be all for now. I may need to question you later’ was all he said. He turned as if to leave and then said , as if as an afterthought. ‘Do you belong to a secret society, Mr Barlowe?’
Just for a fleeting second Reggie Barlowe looked thrown off balance, then he smiled and replied ‘If I was to tell you I did, then it would no longer be secret, would it Inspector?’ he paused, then added ‘As a matter of fact I do belong to a society, the Reapers, they hang out in the West End of London. I don’t get there as often as I would like, but there you have it, you cannot have everything can you?’
‘Do you have a ring you wear with this society, Mr Barlowe? May I see it?’
‘Ring? What ring? Oh I see you mean the ring the Ring that the
Thespians wear, no Inspector, that is a totally different society. The Order of Thespis, after the Greek dramatist you know’ he offered ‘They wear a rather showy ring with an eagle on it,; that the one you mean?’
