Artist's Description

This is Alston, in Cumbria, it used to be in Scotland until the Jacobean war of 1751 and then it became the property of the English, and since then has resided in Northumberland, County Durham and now Cumbria. This small market town nestles in the very heart of the dales, and on Alston Moor at a place called Garrigill you have the meeting of the waters, three tiny little streams which in their turn move down the hills gathering size and mmentum as they go, these are the tributeries of the mighty Tyne, Tees and Wear rivers, and they all end their journey in the great North Sea. These tiny streams were the heart and pulse of the great Ship Building industry of the North East, sadly no more, but not by any means forgotten.
