At first there was the beginning
and we took into our hands
our faces our expressions
and placed in our memories
no words at all
We circled around the fountain
and caught glimpses of the wind
We walked down streets
of houses so old
and in our hearts grew
the excitement of an era
in which we never lived
but were very much a part
We felt the heat of the first summer
sitting on floors of wood
and our nights brought breezes
of music
and the music
was the words we spoke
We laughed in front of
great white pillars
We were the audience
of our own play
We were the actors
observing the actors
and the play was the bond
between us
We were both coming forward
coming through a part of ourselves
leaving behind a part of ourselves
Our eyes expressed confusion
conclusions were abrupt
yet quickly changed
as each new day hit
head-on with our lives
Smoke filled crowded corners
yet the crowd brought
no new experiences
In search of better things
we breathed the air of new cities
we walked the sidewalks
and played games of childhood folly
We laughed at the irony of truth
We lived the extravagance of simplicity
and skipped lightly through
alleys of fate
We held hands on the deserted streets
yet our bodies never met
We cried in each other’s arms
for our ever-changing lives
yet smiled gently at
the dear sweet moment
we held in our hands
Lights brightened and shadows darkened
on a November night of returning
Glasses clicked and words flowed heavily
Understanding touched
and sleep came
bringing dreams of tomorrow
Seasons were our measurement of time
and time was our measurement of love
Winter brought snow
and new ideas flowed over tabletops
of continual conversations
Emotions were our standards
development was often scarred
and last year cried out
with the pain of death
yet our todays laughed
away tears
of too-much-thinking
and our tomorrows awaited
statues that crumbled
but a seed lay planted
and the years behind us
cried out
