A Mother's Letter to Her Daughter

Dear Maria,

This letter carries all of mommy’s love.

You were named after the blessed Virgin Mary. A name that echoes through time and many lands. A name that carries the history of our Saviour. Mommy hopes you will like your name, darling. Mommy was supposed to be named, Helen. She knows, dearest, it’s a shocker.

She imagined that very day she will be told about you. Oh, little one, it will be the day she will live again. It will be a brand new life for and inside of her. Morning sickness are like curse spells but they all tend to disappear whenever she hears your heart beat. You will look like a magical doll moving inside of mommy during her ultrasound. She will have copies of your “photos.” You’re photogenic. She will know a model is growing inside of her.

She imagined your features. Your big brown eyes like mommy’s. They will be windows to your soul. You will have mommy’s natural black curly hair and small ears. Oh how wonderful it will be to shoot you with mommy’s camera looking like a little princess. She imagined you growing taller than her. Smooth skin and fair complexion. Hands and feet better than mommy’s. Lips so red and full. You will blush like mommy.

You will have your own room but she will sleep with you when you are afraid of the sandman underneath your bed. Mommy will teach you to pray every night and drink water before you sleep. She will have a dream-catcher hanging above you. Her brother said it’s a powerful tool to keep you away from bad dreams. She will teach you to pray every morning as well. Not a memorized prayer but a heart to heart conversation with God.

Mommy will be your first teacher. You will speak of kindess and truth. She will teach you to love, care, and respect. You will have many friends and she will teach you to treat them fairly. You will have fights but she will be there to be your best friend. She will tell you if you are in the wrong side. You will hate her more than once because you will think that she is against you. But she will never stop loving you and you will know and feel that. Experiences will help you grow.

You will be allowed to have pets except for frogs/toads, lizards, snakes, spiders. Mommy will suggest a dog but of course it will be your choice except for those
previously enumerated. Mommy dies a thousand deaths just being around one of them.

You will have responsibilities at home and in your community. You will be taught the value of responsibilities. You will be disciplined if you break them. Mommy will do so because she wants you to be a good person.

She will not force you to follow her religion. You will have your choice. Religion will not save you, it’s your faith. You will know that because she will be your example. Whatever you decide, know that she will always love you.

Mommy doesnt have to force you to skate because you will be born to do it. It runs through your veins. Every morning you dont have to wake her up because she knows it’s skating time. She will buy you the best costumes and the best skates. She will find the best coach. She will work two to three jobs just for you. Just to see you glide
marvelously on ice is enough to heal her tired body. She will support you all the way. She will be proud of you.

You will attend the best schools in all levels. Mommy will ensure that. You will not be forced to be number 1 because in her heart, you already are. She will impart to you all her hopes and good intentions. She will trust your heart and your mind. You will have a balance of studies and fun times.

One day, men will fall in line to get your attention. Mommy will be strict to protect you. She will be there to get to know them. There is nothing wrong with that. Always remember though that she will tell you to follow your heart. To choose your heart above all else. Your heart will make you genuinely happy. She only wants the best for you. You will fall in love. You will have your heart broken and then fall in love again. But know that she will always be there to help mend you.

You will never be afraid to grow, to speak your mind, to make decisions because you will know that you are whole. Your spirit will never be broken because mommy has given you hers to make it stronger.

You will be a daughter, wife, mother, friend, citizen. But most of all, you will be YOU.

Know that mommy loves you….I love you. You are the daughter I’ve always dreamt of.

This letter will not reach you for I can never have someone like you.

You will forever be a dream, a distant star.

But for now, let me call you my baby and I am your mommy.
