Artist's Description

The white house covered in
“knobs” has beautifully
shaped pavements in front.
Somebody important must
have lived in it once.He also
had a sea view.

I have now found out that it´s
called Casa dos Bicos and
was built by the Viceroy of
India in 1523, with some influence
from Italian architecture. It´s one
of few buildings that still stood after
the catastrophic earthquake
in Lisbon on November 1st 1755,
that graded 9 on the Richter scale!

I´ve also found out that the first
Viceroy of India was Vasco da Gama
and that he died in Calicut in 1524,
so it´s likely that it was his successor
who came to live here.
