Broken Piano

My eyes don’t lie when there’s sweet music near.
Fingertips are light and delicately placed amongst these keys. I’d been walking my darling dog down a street in town, and came upon this abandoned beauty. I felt myself surrender to its comforting nature as I lost the world around. The music made was as lovely as the scent of home. I felt strangely connected to those I’d never met, the ones who’d used the same keys I was touching. Musical talent flowed through my bones. I hadn’t played since eleventh grade and this tune was unfamiliar. I felt compelled to continue this impromptu piece until my hands began to slow. I stood to leave and that’s when I saw him, a tear had betrayed his own cheek.

“That piece you played, where did you hear it?”

Silence was all I could manage.

“My mother wrote that song, she played it for me when I was a child. It helped me sleep each night. That’s her piano, she passed two days ago and I couldn’t look at it any longer. How did you know?”

He turned his head, most likely wondering why he was talking to a stranger.

I knew he was waiting for me to speak, yet I was too slack jawed to mutter anything that could be understood. I felt bashful in his presence, and found my eyes wandering to the ground. When I found his eyes again, there was a new sweetness in them. The wind played with the lace of my skirt when he reached his hand out to me. I didn’t take it right away, I waited hesitently.

“I’m Mark.”

I smiled in return and he smiled too. There was something familiar in it. I didn’t give my name but offered my hand, and he took it without thinking.

“Please, come to coffee with me. It would make my day if you did.”

His eyes were pleading and I couldn’t say no.
The rest of the day played out like dominos. Hours passed in what seemed like seconds, and the months like days and minutes.
