Gorge on the flatlands

Inside a gorge,
the days are short
just 12 degrees,
the rest in scattered light.

The view shows sandstone,
granite, boulders,
in all directions
as a cage with one way in,
another out,
the cliffs too steep
to climb.

Each word returns
to those who speak,
the crack of thunder
magnified.

Vision is short,
it fills the eye,
from cliff to cliff,
just as the wave of sound
is trapped,
so is the spirit caught
inside a crack.

The eagles soar as sign
to rise,
up there no walls
to constrain spirit,

except in the unseen flatland canyons,
valleys, gorges,
each with cliffs that reach
2 minutes past the end of time.
