Artist's Description

The Old Mission Dam is located in what is now The Mission Trails Regional Park. This photo shows part of the original 244 foot long dam built between 1809 -1815.
Father Junipero Serra , founded the Mission in this beautiful area of valleys and mountains in 1769.
Today, highways, roads, and communites cover some of the area but the Mission Trails Regional Park remains much the same as it was at that time, and is entered by way of Father Junipero Serra Trail road.
The mission, originally, was near the San Diego River, which supplied water needs to the friars the local Indians and settlers, but by 1867 the dam was mostly in ruins, as seen in this photograph.
