Dedicated to African American youth, may they live, happy & SAFE lives
This is my Kwanzaa Table.. ready for the first night of Kwanzaa, December 26, 2010
In the British countries this day is known as Boxing Day, but in the United States, a very special African American celebration of culture, known as Kwanzaa, begins on that day and lasts for 7 days.
The 7 Principles upon which the family ponders and discusses every night with the lighting of each new candle.. are to me .. universal.. and so I share them with all of you.
“The Seven Principles*

In 1966, this unique holiday was created by Maulana ( Ron) Karenga.
Kwanzaa translates from the Swahili to mean first fruits of the harvest
It is very ceremonial and ends with a glorious feast!!

Each of the items on the table represent something specific.

The straw mat: reverence for tradition
Fruits and vegetables: the product of unified effort
Ears of Corn: one for each child in the family
Simple gifts: preferably something African related (my wood sculpture purchased in Kenya)
Communal Cup: for the libation to pay homage to black Americans of past, present and future
The Kinara: the seven branched candle holder, symbolizing the continent of Africa and its peoples.
The Candles : 7 candles to represent each of the 7 principles; black for the skin, red for blood, and green for the earth.

May the spirit of of Kwanzaa be with you always
