Christian Demonology - A

Right if I am going to right an essay on demons I am going to have make something clear.
Demons were not always seen as evil creatures, Homer called the gods demons and sometimes just gods, he used the 2 names interchangeably. It was also believed by some that demons served as messengers between men and the gods. Some believed demons were once men(there is still lore today that says men can become demons). Plutarch once commented on demons and the soul, I am not going to bore you with a quote but it goes something like “souls advanced to heroes and then to demons and after that something better” that’s my take on what he said. Well anyway if heroes are a force for good and a soul ascends to being a demon from them surely he thought demons good, no? Anyway there is plenty of lore in the ancient world that didn’t always depict them as bad spirits, some cultures believed demons were something to pay respect to or they could be really annoying to you, they were believed to own parts of the land and as you crossed into a new demons territory you had to say hello to them or offer them bread, just to be polite(plus they apparently did bad things to you if didn’t acknowledge them).
So as you all probably guessed I am a big fan a demon lore, and I am big on biblical based demonology, so that is what I am going to write about. I shall list the more important Demons in alphabetical order rather than title, mainly because apart from the the Ars Goetia(a part of The Lesser Key of Solomon), Pseudomonarchia Daemonum and a few other random books there aren’t that many records of the many supposed monarchies(remember, these demons don’t really exist so anyone can make anything up about them, I have set myself a hard task that likely not many people will care about, lol) and I don’t have any of those at hand right now(duh). I am scouring many of my demonology resources on the net to write this, you best enjoy it! You don’t have to but I would prefer you do.
I am going to be very sparring with which demons I pick, so I am going to only write about ones with a high “title” and also I deem are of some interest. Also I might throw in a little Jewish or other religious lore here and there.

Abaddon – Angel of the Abyss and King of Locust

Abaddon was not originally a demon but a place in hell where the fallen angels were temporarily left(possibly while God got the abyss ready for them) before they were placed in the abyss as their punishement. The word abaddon means destruction, and in the bible abaddon means “place of destruction”, in jewish religion it is also a place in Gehenna(the jewish hell) so basically they are the same.
In biblical demonology he is the chief of demons of the highest hierarchy(I think, if not he is the chief of the 7th which ever is first… I forget), and thus he is also equated with Satan on the odd occasion. Saint John was the one to blame for personifying him, and he only makes an appearance in the book of revelation after the fifth angel sounds it’s trumpet.
He is the bibles equivalent to the Greek god Apollyn. Some of the many titles given to the personified Abaddon are: The Angel with the Key to the Abyss, The Ancient Serpent, The Dragon, King of Locust and Angel of the Abyss.
Some Christians(Jehovah’s Witnesses mainly) believe Abaddon is a good guy because Moses evoked his name to bring down heavy rain.

Adrammelech – High Chancellor of hell and President of the high council of Devils

‘the Avvites made Nibhaz and Tartak, and the Sepharvites burn their children in the fire as sacrifices to Adrammelech and Anammelech, the gods of Sepharvaim.’ – 2 Kings 17:31

Adrammelech is mentioned twice in the old testament, 1st time as the son of the Assyrian king, he and his brother murdered their father whilst he worshipped his god(Nisrach) in the temple. The second time he is mentioned he is the sun god that is worshipped in the town “Sepharvaim” by the Sepharvites.
According to some scholars Adrammelech holds a good few seats of power in hell, he is also apparently in charge of Satans wardrobe(who said demons aren’t fashion conscious?). He is a demonized pagan god. He has the face and torso of a man and the limbs and groin of a mule or peacock.

“The enemy of God, greater in ambition, guile and mischief than Satan. A fiend more curst — a deeper hypocrite.”(A description of Addramelech in a poem)

Amy – Nothing special about this one, I just liketh her description.
(for arguments sake demons in Christian Demonology are considered to be hermaphrodites and are mostly referred to as male)

“Amy is a great president, and appeareth in a flame of fire, but having taken mans shape, he maketh one marvelous in astrology, and in all the liberal sciences, he procureth excellent familiars, he bewareth treasures preserved by spirits, he hath the government of thirty-six legions, he is partly of the order of angels, partly of potestats, he hopeth after a thousand two hundreth years to returneth to the seventh throne: which is not credible.”

Asmodeus – Demon of lust, wrath and the son of Naamah and Adam.

This demon is in several mythologies, especially when it comes to King Solomon.
Asmodeus fell in love with a woman named Sarah and wouldn’t allow any men to marry her, so on the night of their wedding Asmodeus would kill Sarah’s new husband. Eventually Asmodeus was banished by the 8th husband with the help of the angel Raphael. Raphael being the bag of fun he is told Tobias(8th husband) to burn a fish heart and some fish lungs to banish the demon. It worked and Asmodeus fled to Egypt(he hates water and fish).

“The demon, repelled by the odor of the fish, fled into Upper Egypt; Raphael pursued him there and bound him hand and foot.” – Book of Tobit 8:3

As well as that Asmodeus is summoned by King Solomon to help build his temple, but Asmodeus informs him that one day his kingom will be divided.

“My constellation (is like an animal which) reclines in its den in heaven; some men call me the Great Bear, but others the Offspring of a Dragon. Moreover, a smaller constellation accompanies my constellation, for the high position and throne of my father is always in the sky. So do not ask me so many things, Solomon, for eventually your kingdom will be divided. This glory of yours is temporary. You have us to torture for a little while; then we shall disperse among human beings again with the result that we shall be worshiped as gods because men do not know the names of the angels who rule over us.” – Testament of Solomon 5:4-5

In the Malleus Maleficirum(a book used to spot witches and remove doubt of the existence of witchcraft)/Ars Goetia Asmodeus is given the the month of November and the star sign Aquarius.
Apparently he has 72 legions of demons/inferior spirits under his command and is one of the kings of hell. He has the appearance of a chimera with 3 heads(a bull, man and ram) a serpent for a tail and breathed fire.

Asmodeus is believed to be born from Naamah after she had sexual relations with Adam whilst he was married to Lilith. That’s Jewish Lore.

Azazel – Bearer of the Armies of Hell and scapegoat for the Isralites

There is a hell of a lot lore based around Azazel.

Azazel is said to be the leader of the Se’irim a species of goat demons. Semitic tribes offered sacrifices to the Se’irim, in the old testament they are appointed priests and places of worship by Jeroboam. Joshua destroyed the places of worship because worshipping the Se’irim involved women having sex with billy goats.

Leviticus 16:8 tells that the Lord ordered his high priest, Aaron, to “place lots upon the two goats, one marked for the Lord and the other marked for Azazel” on the Jewish Day of Atonement. The goat designated by lot for the Lord is to be used as a sin offering, while the goat designated for Azazel “shall be left standing alive before the Lord, to make expiation with it and to send it off to the wilderness for Azazel.” (Lev 16:10) Aaron was to “lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat and confess over it all the iniquities and transgressions of the Israelites, whatever their sins, putting them on the head of the goat; and it shall be sent off to the wilderness. Thus the goat shall carry on it all their iniquities to an inaccessible region; and the goat shall be set free in the wilderness.” (Lev 16:21-22) Leviticus also says that “He who set the Azazel-goat free shall wash his clothes and bathe his body in water; after that he may reenter the camp.” (16:26) Azazel is portrayed as a physical being who lives in the wilderness like the Se’irim. Through this ritual Azazel became known as the scapegoat.

In the book of Enoch Azazel is portrayed as the leader of the watchers. This group of angels taught mankind the secrets of heaven and how to use the natural resources of the earth to create things. He is blamed for teaching mankind to create weapons and cosmetics for the women to seduce angels.

“And Azazel taught the people (the art of) making swords and knives, and shields, and breastplates; and he showed to their chosen ones bracelets, decorations, (shadowing of the eye) with antimony, ornamentation, the beautifying of the eyelids, all kinds of precious stones, and all coloring tinctures and alchemy.” – 1 Enoch 8:1

Azazel was also one of the chief Grigori which was a group of fallen angels that married and interbreed with human women(A myth told in genesis, but Azazel is left unnamed). Azazel was cast out of heaven for teaching mankind the ways of war and seduction and was punished by Raphael who chained him hand and foot to a rock, cast him into a pit made in the sands of Dudael and covered him with a mountain until judgment day when he would be put to the fire.

Azazel makes another appearance in the story of the Apocalypse of Abraham as a dirty bird.

“And the unclean bird spoke to me and said, ‘What are you doing, Abraham, on the holy heights, where no one eats or drinks, nor is there upon them food for men. But these all will be consumed by fire and ascend to the height, they will destroy you.’ And it came to pass when I saw the bird speaking I said this to the angel: ‘What is this, my lord?’ And he said, ‘This is disgrace, this is Azazel!’ And he said to him, ‘Shame on you Azazel! For Abraham’s portion is in heaven, and yours is on earth, for you have selected here, (and) become enamored of the dwelling place of your blemish. Therefore the Eternal Ruler, the Mighty One, has given you a dwelling on earth. Through you the all-evil spirit (is) a liar, and through you (are) wrath and trials on the generations of men who live impiously.” Apocalypse of Abraham 13:4-9

For trivial information Azazel is the name of the yellow eyed demon in the TV series “Supernatural”. That’s the end of the list of demons in the A list, next will come B, though I don’t think there are many important ones of them… I had fun writing this! lol
