Artist's Description

I painted this in January whilst crewing on the ship. The watch leader and mate kindly let me continue even when I should have been hauling on the mainsheet, not using it for an easel !! Thanks Alex and Mike!

The deckhouse is where the 10 “foremast” crew lived – the 3 officers, steward and apprentices lived aft, in the much more salubrious officers’ quarters under the quarter deck. The boat on the deckhouse is not a life boat, but one of the three “ship’s boats”. These were used to take stores and the crew to and from the shore. Cargo on the other hand would be loaded via lighters and barges, or the ship would be brought along-side a wharf.
