Artist's Description

Oil on Canvas
Big Sur, along the California Coast, Dawn Sky
I was living in the Big Sur redwood forests bordering the coast, and skies like this were the substance of every dawn. On those mountains, the Santa Lucia range, golden eagles nest and swoop the sea cliffs, hunting fish. Big Sur is extraordinary, raw and primitive in nature, very rough, wild. It’s almost too much to take in. The forests contain giant ancient redwoods that touch the clouds, fern bowering streams, right up to the ocean’s sand. There is a bay tree there, notorious for it’s powerful odor, crushing a leaf in your fingers is like a hit of ayml nitrate and you feel it for hours. The colors are all heightened by the wet air. Everything seems exaggerated, all your senses fight to curtail implosion.
