Artist's Description

Christmas: From our Christian Masterpiece Collection #CA1470, Adoration by Pietro Perugino. Consistent with the great masters of the ages, Perugino’s 15th century painting shows the eldest of the Magi kneeling before the new born King. Here, an aged Joseph is standing with the aid of a walking stick, and the worshipers behind the Three Kings appear to be men of means and not shepherds or peasants…Pietro Perugino (1446/1452–1523) was an Italian Renaissance painter of the Umbrian school, who developed some of the qualities that found classic expression in the High Renaissance. Raphael was his most famous pupil. He was born to a wealthy family and apprenticed in the workshop of Andrea del Verrocchio beside such masters as Leonardo da Vinci, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Lorenzo di Credi, and Filippino Lippi. Perugino was one of the earliest Italian practitioners of oil painting. Some of his early works were extensive frescoes including panels for the Sistine Chapel in Rome, a project he began in 1480 and worked on exclusively for the next six years of his life. A good example of his early style in tempera is a circular picture of the Virgin and Child Enthroned between Saints, currently displayed in the Musée du Louvre, in Paris, France.
