Artist's Description

Christmas: From our Christian Masterpiece Collection #CM1464, Adoration of the Magi by Roger van der Weyden. Distinguished by its vivid character illustrations and colors, this 1464 masterpiece depicts the Three Wise Men much as is common for the scene. Once again we see the eldest of the Magi kneeling before the new born King with the other two beside him waiting to worship the infant Jesus and present their gifts. Caspar is about to kiss the child’s hand as an aged Joseph, holding a walking stick, looks on… Roger van der Weyden was an early Dutch painter (1399/1400–1464). His surviving works consist mainly of religious triptychs, altarpieces and commissioned single and diptych portraits. Although his life was generally uneventful, he was highly successful and internationally famous in his lifetime, however his fame lasted only until the 17th century, and largely due to changing taste, he was almost totally forgotten by the mid 18th century. Van der Weyden worked from life models, and his observations were acute. He often idealized certain elements of his models’ facial features, and they are typically statuesque. All of his forms are rendered with rich, warm colorizations and a sympathetic expression. Van der Weyden utilized an unusually broad range of colors and varied tones. Despite the loss or destruction of much of his works, today, he is widely known as the most influential Northern painter of the 15th century.
