Artist's Description

Bakery at Sacred Heart Mission

This is one of the only buildings to survive the great fire of 1901, which destroyed the monastery complex.

This structure is made of native sandstone, its cornerstone is dated 1881. It is a three story structure with a basement.

It was in this bakery where the sisters baked 500 big French loaves of bread each day.

The mission had the Indian Advocate, its own publication, printed in the bakery building. Published from 1888 to 1910, it was a quarterly review, then a monthly magazine. The Advocate was aimed at an audience of friends and supporters of the Catholic missions to the Indians as well as Indian students and members.

You can also see another photo of the bakery in Fishlady77 folio.
