Artist's Description

Derivation of name:
The genus name for the Southern Red Bishop, Euplectes, is from Greek, meaning ‘well-woven’, presumably referring to their nests, and the specific epithet, orix, is from Greek meaning ‘rice’, perhaps referring to the birds’ diet, which is mainly seeds. The breeding males are brightly coloured with red (occasionally orange) and black plumage. Euplectes orix occurs in southern Africa, except the Kalahari region, southern and coastal Namibia, and most of Botswana. More info
I took a photo of this brightly coloured and lovely bird and then did a painting in waterpaint on 300gsm paper. (Gauteng, South Africa)
