Artist's Description

The church built in a day — 1843 – Our Lady of Sorrows Chapel

In 1843, at the request of Bishop William Walsh, 2000 men gathered at St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica and proceeded to clear the area for the chapel and cemetery. A month later, on August 31, the same crew gathered to build Our Lady Of Sorrows Chapel in a single day. The chapel has seats for 70 people, and has a large stained glass window dating from 1661. Woodcarvings in the chapel were taken from a Flemish church of 1550. Mass is still celebrated at the chapel once a year by a priest from St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica in Halifax Nova Scotia.
