Artist's Description

Born Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone in 1181 or 1182 (date uncertain), Saint Francis of Assisi is the founder of the Franciscan Order. He is known as the patron saint of animals and today has become synonymous with the care and concern of all living things and the environment. In 1979 he became recognized as the patron saint of ecology. Many of the stories and legends that surround the life of St. Francis focus on his compassion for animals, and he is often portrayed with a bird perched on his hand. I took creative license in my illustration and show him tenderly feeding a fawn. His simple life and great love for animals is what inspired me to create this image and honor his compassionate approach to the world. I hope you are as moved by this image as much as I was inspired in its development.
